According to a study by GuidePoint Security, the third quarter of this year was marked by the emergence of new hacker groups and an increasing number of ransomware attacks targeting companies. The study recorded 1,353 ransomware victims and identified 46 different hacker organizations worldwide between early July and the end of August, representing a 15% increase compared to the previous quarter and an 83% increase over the past year.
GuidePoint Security’s analysis shows that the steady rise in ransomware attacks targeting businesses continued in the third quarter of 2023. Since the second quarter, global ransomware activity has increased by 15% due to the growing number of ransomware groups, including ten newly detected groups that were first identified this quarter.
In the third quarter alone, ransomware attacks harmed 1,353 organizations, with 46 different threat groups responsible for these attacks. By the end of August 2023, a total of 3,385 successful ransomware attacks had been recorded, attributed to 57 different hacker organizations—an 83% year-over-year increase. The most heavily impacted industries were the manufacturing and technology sectors, followed closely by the retail and wholesale industries.
Despite a slower increase in the number of malicious actors, the number of corporate victims of ransomware attacks continues to rise significantly each year.
